Make your own butterfly - pūrerehua

Put your ‘creative hat’ on and enjoy some art and crafts.
Get out your paper plates and use them to make your own beautiful butterfly.
You’ll need:
*Paper plate
*Glue
*Scissors
*Paint or crayons
*Cellotape
*Stapler
*Coloured or plain paper
*Googly eyes (or you can draw them)
*Any stickers, glitter or jewels you might have to decorate your butterfly
*Pipe cleaners for the antenna (or you can draw them on if you don’t have any)

Start by cutting your paper plate in half. These will be your wings. Cut a triangle (or any shape) out of each wing.

Staple the wings together in the middle.
Use paint or crayons to decorate your wings. You can create matching patterns, paint stripes, dots, waves - get creative!

Use a piece of coloured paper (cut out a strip)and glue to stick the body to your butterfly.
Glue on your google eyes. If you don’t have any, simply draw some eyes, cut them out and glue them on! Decorate the body with stickers, gems, jewels or glitter - whatever you have at home!

Add your antenna - if you have pipe cleaners, cellotape them to the back of your butterfly. If you don’t have any, draw some on with felts or crayons.
You have created a beautiful butterfly - or Pūrerehua in Māori.
Well done!
Another option if you don’t have any paper plates at home is to use paper and paints, crayons or felts.

Simply fold a piece of plain white paper in half.
Draw your wing design and cut it out.

Fold the wing in half (back on itself) and press down to ‘smoosh the paint.’

Unfold your paper to reveal two beautiful wings!

If you want to keep adding to your butterfly, stick it onto a piece of coloured or plain paper.
Cut out a strip of coloured paper to make the body. Add your eyes (either googly eyes or draw your own). Draw on the antenna using a felt or crayon.
