Delicious Home Baked Bread
I have always enjoyed making my own bread, but don’t always have that much time to spare. Time is something many of us have right now so I thought I would give it a go. It’s really easy, you just have to be patient!! It is a cool activity to do with children as it is exciting watching the yeast do its job!! Thanks to Raquel from @auckwardveggie for the recipe
Ingredients:
4 cups of flour- (500gms)
1 Tablespoon of sugar
320 mls of warm water-not too hot (tepid)
7gm or a heaped tsp of yeast
1 tsp of salt
Note: It is a good idea to have some ingredients to add to make your bread even more yummy!! I used garlic powder, dried rosemary and sesame seeds. You can make it sweet by adding a little more sugar, sultanas and cinnamon if you like.
Method:
- Wash your hands and sanitise!!
- Using a big bowl, add flour, salt, sugar, yeast and mix it with a wooden spoon. Make a well in the centre and add the water. Mix with your hands until it goes together in a big ball. If it doesn't seem to go well together, add a little more warm water.
- Remove from the bowl and knead the dough on a floured board or straight on your clean bench top. Knead well for about ten minutes.
- Cover and place in a warm place without any draughts. I put mine in the hot water cupboard, not directly on the cylinder or it will be too hot!! Leave to rise for about ½ an hour- it should double in size!!
- When it has risen, place it on the floured board or bench top again and knead for about 30 seconds to knock the air out. Now the fun, it's time to shape your dough and add any yummy extras such as garlic, seeds and herbs!!
- Place your shaped bread in the bowl again and put it back in the hot water cupboard to rise, it should double in size. This time it can take between 30 mins and an hour.
- Once it has risen again, place dough on an oven tray and bake for 25-30 minutes at 170 degrees celsius. Close the oven door gently or you could lose all the lovely air in your bread!
- You can check it is cooked by tapping the bottom and if it sounds hollow, it is ready!!
Your kitchen will now smell delicious and all you need to do is slice your bread and add your favourite topping!! Enjoy!!
