As we began preparing for our two-week Matariki celebration, you joined Sue and Genna for your very first weaving experience.

Using a black or navy blue card with carefully cut slits, you learned how to weave white and red paper strips by following the under-and-over pattern. Sue and Genna guided you through each step, encouraging you to look carefully, think about the pattern, and keep trying.

You quickly mastered this new skill! It was wonderful to see your concentration and determination as you carefully threaded each strip through the card. You smiled proudly as your weaving began to take shape, showing growing confidence and perseverance.

This experience supported your learning in Te Whāriki, particularly Mana Aotūroa | Exploration, as you developed problem-solving skills, hand-eye coordination, and confidence in trying something new. It also reflected Mana Tangata | Contribution, as you learned alongside your friends, shared ideas, and celebrated each other's success.

Your weaving was a wonderful way to begin our Matariki celebrations, helping you connect with an important cultural tradition while strengthening your fine motor skills, perseverance, and confidence as a learner. We look forward to exploring more Matariki activities together over the coming weeks. Next, we plan to use this new skill to create traditional harakeke (flax) crafts.
