As we have been learning all about insects, we decided that it would be exciting to extend this interest by creating play dough insects. We all loved the wonderful ‘insect green’ dough. We made butterflies, caterpillars, grasshoppers, and even praying mantises.
I was so impressed with how detailed and creative the insects were. They even had the three main body parts of an insect, the head, thorax, and abdomen, as well as six legs, two antennae, and compound eyes. You have clearly been listening well at meeting times. Some of the insects had wings added, too.

As Te Whāriki reminds us, you are making meaningful connections between what you have been learning during meeting times and applying that knowledge in your play. Exploring an insect’s body through play dough was such a rich extension of your learning. Maybe next time we could take it even further, perhaps by creating insect cookies for a fun (and yummy) next step!
